FRIENDS OF DECKERS CREEK
OSM/VISTA Position Job Description

 February 27, 2008

Friends of Deckers Creek (FODC) is a non-profit watershed group aimed to improve, protect and promote the 64-square mile Deckers Creek watershed in Preston and Monongalia counties, WV.  Deckers Creek is a direct tributary to the Monongahela River in Morgantown. The creek has many beautiful scenic areas, hosts good fishing in a few sections, and is the steepest boatable creek on the east coast for experienced kayakers. However, Deckers Creek and many of its tributaries are polluted by acid mine drainage from abandoned coal mines. The stream system is also challenged by untreated sewage, erosion, sediment, encroachment, construction and trash.

FODC is a small but extremely adept organization. The four person staff and board of directors have expertise in environmental science, environmental policy, law, fisheries management and other areas. Operations are centered in Morgantown, WV, and the organization frequently takes advantage of additional expertise at West Virginia University.

The OSM/VISTA position is a full-time one year position starting summer 2008 consistent with the Americorps/VISTA rules and regulations within the Appalachian Coal Country Watershed Team (www.accwt.org). The VISTA program provides a $750 monthly living stipend, health insurance, child care if eligible, student loan forbearance (with interest paid), and the choice of a $4,725 education award or $1,200 cash stipend upon term completion. FODC is also committed to helping with monthly rent obligations for the hired VISTA.

FODC is seeking one individual to serve as an OSM/VISTA in a dynamic, interdisciplinary position. The individual’s tasks will build the capacity of FODC to carry out its mission. Tasks will include recruiting and leading volunteers, organizing volunteers to monitor acid mine drainage sources and stream health, coordinating fundraising and community outreach events, assisting with environmental education initiatives, working with the community to improve access to Deckers Creek, grant writing, and some administrative tasks. The existing team of staff and board members is supportive and task oriented, and will distribute responsibilities realistically.  We are seeking someone with self-motivation and effective oral and written communication skills. Interested persons with a wide-range of backgrounds, education, and experience are encouraged to apply. We hope to conclude hiring by April 1, 2008.
